I am writing to share my experience with you, specifically how my family and I have been coping since we discovered that my youngest child is allergic to milk, eggs, nuts and coconut. It was a traumatic incident that happened when we were on vacation and he was only 6 months old. That incident has taught us a great deal, and we have since been working tirelessly to ensure that we have the necessary tips and tricks to make travel a smoother process for both us and our child.

Despite the challenges we face as a family, we have always maintained a positive outlook and strived to make the most of every situation. We hope that by sharing our travel tips, we can help other families with children who may also be dealing with allergies and other health concerns.

1. Always carry an epipen and any allergy medications prescribed by your doctor.

2. Research allergy-friendly restaurants and other food options ahead of time, to ensure a safe and enjoyable dining experience.

3.To make communication with waitstaff easier, consider writing your allergies on a business card or small piece of paper to hand to your waiter. This can save time and confusion, and help ensure your needs are met.

4. It is always best to contact the hotel or resort ahead of time and inform them about your allergies. This allows the hotel staff to make necessary arrangements to ensure a safe and enjoyable stay for you. Some hotels and resorts have experienced chefs who can customize a menu based on your dietary requirements. This is a great way to avoid any allergic reactions during the trip.

5. It is a good idea to  carry some extra snacks that have safe ingredients with you. You never know when you might need a quick snack or if there are limited options available for you outside of scheduled meals. Being prepared can save you from potentially dangerous situations.

6. Plan your daily itinerary and research the nearest hospitals. By doing so, you will know where the hospitals are located and their names which will save you time and energy in case you ever find yourself in a situation where medical assistance is needed.

7. When traveling to remote areas without proper food accommodations or hospitals nearby, you can bring your own prepared food. This will not only provide you with nourishment and sustenance but also peace of mind as you can enjoy your adventure without worrying about access to food.

8. If you see something that looks delicious but you’re not sure if it contains ingredients that you’re allergic to, don’t hesitate to ask for an ingredient list. It’s important to let the restaurant staff or seller know about your food allergies, explaining that it is a serious matter that could impact your health significantly. By doing this, you’ll be doing yourself a great favor and preventing any potential allergic reactions.

9.Another way to protect yourself from food allergies and raise awareness is by wearing an allergy awareness accessory. This is especially important for both adults and children who have severe allergies and could potentially save their life. There are many allergy awareness accessories that exist, so you should choose one that best suits you or your child’s style and comfort.

10. And, last but not least it is  always important to cover all your bases. One of the most critical steps is letting your traveling companions know about your specific allergies. Not only will this help prevent any accidental exposure to allergens, but it will also ensure that they are aware of what steps to take in case of an emergency. In some cases, having someone nearby who is informed and prepared can make the difference between life and death. Whether you’re traveling with family, friends or colleagues, taking the time to have an open conversation about your allergies can make all the difference. So before you hit the road, make sure that everyone in your travel group is on the same page and knows exactly what to do if an allergic reaction occurs.
